Living in Mumbai the last six years has regaled me in more ways than one. However there is one thing that takes away the cake with all fervor around it – Ganpati !! Though there are times when I have been so stuck on roads or closed myself at home, one cannot miss the colors, the joy and the madness the comes along-with the festival. Bollywood movies have also not been far behind when it comes to celebrate this festival and a number of them have quite elaborate display of affection for Lord Ganesha. Here I am recounting some of my favorite ones –
This beautiful aarti comes at a very pivotal time in the movie. While the song begins with the celebrations in Hrithik’s chawl, it moves on to the scene of visarjan and epic lines ‘naam , Vijay Deenanath Chauhan’ and culminates with the high decibel aarti. Interestingly, the original Agneepath also had Mithun da dancing to ‘Bappa Maurya Re‘.
Agneepath is available to watch on Google Play, iTunes and YouTube. Original Agneepath is available to watch on Google Play.
ABCD and ABCD2 celebrate Ganpati with some very well choreographed odes to Lord Ganesha. While there was ‘Sadda Dil Vi Tu’ in ABCD , a fun modern fusion take sung by Hard Kaur, the sequel had ‘Hey Ganaraya’ – a musical arti beautifully crafted toward the climax of the movie.
You can watch ABCD online on Eros Now, Hungama, Spuul and YouTube and ABCD2 on SonyLiv
Sindoor Lal Chadayo – Vaastav
One can hear Sindoor Lal Chadayo across households in Mumbai during this time of the year. The song also features in the Movie – Vaastav with Sanjay Dutt’s entire family singing it together. Its impossible to hear this and not sing back ‘Jaydev Jaydev’.
One of the latest movies to feature an ode to the lord is Bajirao Mastani – ‘Gajanana’. Sung by Sukhwinder Singh, this song also comes at a critical juncture in the movie. While Bajirao is offering his prayers to Ganesha, his Mastani is being attacked at her palace. Beautifully shot, this song also went down in the Guinness World Records as the biggest launch done for a song with a human formation – 5200 students to create a mosaic image of Ganpati!
Bajirao Mastani is available to watch on Google Play, Eros Now, iTunes and YouTube.
It is difficult to close something without Shahrukh Khan, so here is his first ever Ganpati song with Morya Re from Don. A song full of masti ends with one of the most heard lines during any visarjan –
“ek don teen char – ganpati cha jay-jay kaar
pach chhe saat aath – ganpati hamare saath”
Don is available to watch on Google Play and YouTube
Lord Ganesha, Ganpati, or Gannu, whatever you may call him, may he shower you all with the choicest of his blessings and bring joy and laughter to all your dear ones ! What do you like to call him ? And if there is another great aarti that comes to your mind, do let me know !
