The musical song and dance genres were made into some of the earliest, and sometimes greatest, films. Often these movies have inspired us to dance right along with them, mostly in the privacy of our own living rooms. Our list begins with a film that may have had a low-budget, but ended up giving audiences the time of their lives. Released in 1987, this Emelie Ardolino film starred Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze in one of the most memorable on-screen partnerships. The story is of Baby (Grey), a young adult awaiting deployment with the Peace Corps at a sleepy summer resort. Disappointed with her luck, and stuck in the Catskills with her parents, she finds refuge in dancing with the resorts dance instructor (Swayze). Johnny, the dance coach, enlists her as his partner in the resorts’ talent competition and they spend a significant amount of time training together. The end up falling in love to the iconic 1960’s soundtrack, and they aren’t the only ones dancing to the music. Audiences everywhere have been dancing to songs like “Be My Baby” by The Ronettes and “I’ve Had the Time of My Life.” Dirty Dancing won an Academy Award for Best Original Song and the soundtrack alone sold more than 32 million copies worldwide

Before Grease, John Travolta was dancing along with audiences in Saturday Night Fever. This 1977 film was directed by John Badham, and would help make Disco popular around the world. Travolta plays Tony Moreno, a man that lives for Disco dancing on the weekends. With the announcement of a big dance competition, Moreno begins his search for a dance partner and finally finds Stephanie (Karen Lynn Gorney) to match his grooving moves. The film has been critically acclaimed and would make John Travolta a household name around the world. Despite all of this, the soundtrack would steal the show, and is considered to be one of the best movie soundtracks of all time. With songs like “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gess and “Disco Inferno” by The Trammps, there’s no doubt this movie will have you dancing right along.

Adapted from the hit 1975 Broadway show, Chicago stars Catherine Zeta-Jones as the nightclub singing and dancing sensation Velma. After being arrested for the murder of her husband Velma ends up in jail with Roxie (Renee Zellweger), another dancer being represented by the same lawyer. The two begin competing for public fame as infamous heroines, and even decide to take their show on the road. Chicago was directed by Rob Marshall and released in 2002, and won the Academy Award for Best Picture. Beyond critical acclaim, the perfectly done musical numbers earned this film a place in audiences’ hearts worldwide. This one will certainly have you dancing and singing along, and maybe even trying out a few sexy dance moves of your own.
Step Up Series

The Step Up film series never received love from the critics or earned any awards, but it is certainly loved by audiences everywhere. To date, there have been five films released in the Step Up series since the first debuted in 2006. The one that began it all was directed by Anne Fletcher and starred Channing Tatum as the teenage vandal that earned the opportunity of a lifetime with a scholarship to an acclaimed dance school. The soundtrack from the original film was quite popular, and included songs from Sean Paul, Mario Kelis, and Chris Brown. The second film also starred Tatum, however he did not return for the more recent flms in the series. It was recently announced that the Step Up franchise will make another return, with Tatum as the producer, but will be as a scripted series on YouTube. The top spot on this list takes us all the way back to the 1950’s with Singin’ in the Rain. Critically acclaimed and adored by audiences, this film became an instant classic. Released in 1952, Singin’ in the Rain was directed by Gene Kelly and starred himself along with Donald O’Connor and Debbie Reynolds. The story is set in the transition from silent films to those with sound in the 1920’s, and displays the struggles of one characters’ difficult adapting to the new reality of cinema. Many of the songs from this films soundtrack left their mark on popular culture including, “Singin’ in the Rain,” “Good Morning,” and “Make ‘Em Laugh.” Still considered one of the greatest movies of all time, the film was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry in 1989.
